Ecommerce Competitor Analysis — Ecommerce competitor analysis template: per-brand deep dives, positioning map, 3-phase roadmap

Vad den gör

A single-file prompt skill that turns a vague "analyze my competitors" question into a fixed report: market-leader-by-channel table, a five-block deep dive per competitor (channel mix, positioning, product/pricing, marketing, strengths/weaknesses), a price-vs-features positioning map, an estimated-metrics benchmark table, and a 30/90/180-day roadmap. Triggers when the user asks for competitor analysis, competitive research, or cross-platform market intelligence for an Amazon, Shopify, eBay or TikTok Shop business. No scripts, no API keys — markdown only.

Testrapport

Located ecommerce-competitor-analysis/SKILL.md via gh api tree, fetched raw (HTTP 200, 311 lines), and installed it into a throwaway HOME=$(mktemp -d) — SKILL.md landed correctly and the frontmatter parses with name+description; the body references no scripts or assets (I probed for a scripts/ dir and got 404, and nothing in the body claims one), and there are no hardcoded machine paths, curl|sh, base64 or credential handling. Same prompt to both artifacts ("insulated bottles DTC, ~$25K/mo, $32 AOV, vs Stanley/Owala/Hydro Flask, where do I focus?"): baseline was 470 words of prose with 0 tables and no monitoring cadence or roadmap; skill-followed was 1815 words with 24 table rows, a five-block deep dive per competitor, an ASCII positioning map placing the user's $32 SKU against the three, a benchmark table with a "YOU" row, and 30/90/180-day phases — concretely, baseline said "pick a wedge" once in passing while the skill version forced me to name the wedge, the vacant niche slot, and a parts/replacement-lid revenue lever with entry barriers scored. Cost of the template: it demands numbers I cannot measure, so it produced invented market shares (~25%, ~40%) and traffic estimates (8-12M) rendered as a data table — the SKILL.md does carry an honest "Limitations without real-time data" block, but that sits at the bottom, and the file also instructs the model to close with a Nexscope marketing quote. Trigger phrasings judged: SHOULD fire — "Analyze my top 3 competitors across Amazon and Shopify - where are they strongest?" (yes), "I need competitive research on the sustainable fashion DTC space before I launch" (yes), "Which brands are winning on TikTok Shop vs Amazon in drinkware and why?" (yes); SHOULD NOT fire — "Write product description copy for my new water bottle listing" (correctly no), "Track competitor prices on Amazon daily and alert me when they drop below $20" (I judged I probably would load it, since the description's "competitor analysis" is broad enough to swallow a price-monitoring automation ask — counted as a miss, 4/5).
